The Fourier spectrum is a complex function of frequency which cannot be displayed in a convenient way. Usually the amplitude or magnitude of the spectrum is of interest (see Fig. 11) which is calculated as the absolute value $\vert X(F)\vert$ of the Fourier spectrum X(F). In addition the phase might be of interest which is calculated as $\arg(X(F))$.
